Egypt rewards a well-built itinerary more than almost anywhere, because the great sites are spread along 900 kilometres of river and the heat shapes every day. This trip starts in Cairo, only 3.5 hours from Dubai, with three nights for the essentials: the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum with the treasures of Tutankhamun, the step pyramid at Saqqara and the medieval lanes of Islamic Cairo around the Khan el Khalili bazaar. Your hotel is in Giza with pyramid views on the superior and deluxe tiers, which also keeps you close to the museum and away from the city's heaviest traffic.
A one-hour domestic flight takes you south to Aswan, where the Nile is at its most beautiful, with granite boulders, palm-fringed islands and Nubian villages. You board your ship in the afternoon and spend three nights sailing north, full board, with a qualified Egyptologist guide on every excursion: Philae temple and a felucca sail in Aswan, the double temple at Kom Ombo, the temple of Horus at Edfu, the Esna lock and finally Luxor. Cruise ships on the Nile vary hugely in quality, so Omar Siddiqui, who plans our Egypt departures, uses only ships he has inspected himself.
In Luxor you disembark after the West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, with three tombs included on the standard ticket, the terraced temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. Then one night ashore in a Nile-side hotel, which lets you see Karnak in the afternoon light and Luxor Temple lit up after dark, rather than rushing them before a flight.
What to expect: early starts, often 6 am in Upper Egypt, to beat the heat and the crowds, with afternoons on deck. From October to April days are 22 to 30 degrees; from May to September Aswan and Luxor can pass 40. Egyptian food is a highlight and halal throughout: koshari, ful, grilled pigeon and fresh bread. Dress modestly for mosques and carry small notes for tips, which are part of daily life here.

Day by day
Day 1Arrive in Cairo
The direct flight from Dubai lands in Cairo after about 3.5 hours. Our representative meets you before passport control, helps with the visa formalities and escorts you through the airport to your private car. The transfer to Giza takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. After check-in, relax at the hotel or take a short evening walk. Your Egyptologist guide calls to confirm tomorrow's 7.30 am start, chosen to reach the pyramids before the tour buses. Overnight in Cairo.
Day 2Giza pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum
Start at the Giza plateau as it opens: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint in the desert, then down to the Sphinx and the valley temple. Entering the Great Pyramid is optional and steep. After lunch, visit the Grand Egyptian Museum nearby, where your guide leads you up the grand staircase of statues to the galleries of Tutankhamun's treasures, including the golden mask. Back at the hotel by 5 pm. Overnight in Cairo.
Day 3Saqqara, Memphis and Islamic Cairo
Drive about 40 minutes south to Saqqara for Djoser's step pyramid, the oldest stone monument of its size, and the painted tombs of the nobles. Visit Memphis, the ancient capital, with its colossal statue of Ramses II. After lunch, head into historic Cairo for the Citadel and the Mohamed Ali mosque, then walk through the medieval lanes to Khan el Khalili, ending with mint tea at a famous old café in the bazaar. Overnight in Cairo.
Day 4Fly to Aswan, Philae and a felucca at sunset
An early transfer to the airport for the one-hour flight to Aswan. Your guide meets you and drives you to the High Dam, then by motorboat to the island temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis and moved stone by stone to save it from the rising waters. Board your cruise ship for lunch. In the late afternoon, sail by felucca around Elephantine and Kitchener's islands, past the Aga Khan's mausoleum, as the sun sets. Dinner on board. Overnight on the cruise ship.
Day 5Sail to Kom Ombo
For an optional early excursion, a convoy leaves at 4 am for Abu Simbel, three hours each way through the desert, returning by lunchtime to see the colossal temples of Ramses II. Otherwise, enjoy a slow morning on the sundeck as the ship sets sail. In the afternoon, reach Kom Ombo, a double temple dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris, with its small museum of mummified crocodiles. Visits are timed for the cooler late afternoon. Overnight on the cruise ship.
Day 6Edfu temple and the Esna lock
After an early breakfast, ride a horse-drawn carriage through the town of Edfu to the temple of Horus, the best preserved temple in Egypt, with its towering pylon and dark sanctuary still intact. Return to the ship by mid-morning and sail north through the countryside, with farmers, water buffalo and palm groves along the banks. In the afternoon, the ship passes through the Esna lock, a fascinating manoeuvre, before arriving in Luxor in the evening. Overnight on the cruise ship.
Day 7Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Karnak
Cross to the West Bank at 6 am to visit the Valley of the Kings, with entry to three royal tombs included, followed by the terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut beneath the cliffs and the Colossi of Memnon. Disembark after lunch and check into your Luxor hotel. In the late afternoon, your guide shows you the vast temple complex of Karnak, with its forest of columns in the hypostyle hall, then Luxor Temple illuminated after dark. Overnight in Luxor.
Day 8Fly from Luxor to Cairo and home to Dubai
Enjoy breakfast with the river view, and an optional dawn hot air balloon over the West Bank, from about AED 420 per person, if you like. Your driver takes you to Luxor airport for the one-hour flight to Cairo, where our representative helps with your connection to the 3.5-hour flight to Dubai. Depending on the flight times, you can be home by the evening. Our operations team tracks both flights and is on call throughout.

Travellers on this holiday
The sights were incredible, but our Nile cruise was changed to a sister ship three days before departure and our cabin ended up on a lower deck than booked. Part of the difference was refunded after we complained. Valley of the Kings and Karnak were unforgettable regardless.
South African group of friends, six of us. Balloon over the West Bank of Luxor, the temples at Edfu and Kom Ombo from the cruise, and koshari in Cairo on our last day. The visa formalities were handled for all of us.
Egyptian-born, but my kids had never seen any of it. Daniel found an Egyptologist who was brilliant with children and turned the tombs into a treasure hunt. Felucca ride at Aswan, Philae temple by boat, and a noisy evening in Khan el-Khalili.
Pyramids of Giza at opening time, the Egyptian Museum with a superb guide, then four nights on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. Our cruise cabin had a wide window right on the water. Daniel arranged the early Abu Simbel trip and it was the highlight.
