Georgia in Autumn from Dubai: Wine Harvest, Tbilisi and Kazbegi Colours
Rtveli in Kakheti, golden larches in Kazbegi and mild Tbilisi evenings: how to plan Georgia between September and November, with 5 and 7 night routes, AED prices and visa basics.

In this guide
I have sent more clients to Georgia in October than in any other month, and very few have come back with anything other than a full camera roll and a bag of churchkhela. Summer in Georgia is lovely but busy, and the Gulf crowd arrives in force in July and August. Autumn is when the country is at its most generous: the vineyards are being picked, the mountains turn gold, Tbilisi cools down to perfect walking weather, and hotel rates drop back from their summer peak. The direct flight from Dubai takes about three hours and fifteen minutes, and Georgia sits in the same time zone as the UAE, so there is no jet lag at all. That makes it the best long weekend or school break trip I know.
Why autumn is the best season in Georgia
Think of Georgian autumn in three phases. From mid-September to early October it still feels like late summer: Tbilisi reaches 24 to 27°C in the afternoon, Kakheti is warm and dusty, and the harvest is in full swing. From roughly 5 to 25 October the colours peak in the mountains, nights get crisp, and you need a proper jacket in Kazbegi. From late October into November the first snow arrives on the Jvari Pass, Tbilisi sits at 11 to 15°C, and you get the quiet, moody Georgia that photographers love.
For UAE families, the short autumn mid-term break in October lines up almost perfectly with peak colour. For couples and friends, a Saturday to Tuesday trip with one day of leave is enough for Tbilisi plus Kakheti, and a week gives you the full loop including the mountains.
Rtveli: the wine harvest in Kakheti
Rtveli is the Georgian grape harvest, and in Kakheti, about two hours east of Tbilisi, it runs from mid-September to mid-October depending on the grape and the year. Families pick by hand in the morning, press in the afternoon and feast in the evening. Many of the wines are still made in qvevri, large clay vessels buried in the ground, a method that goes back about 8,000 years.
On our harvest day you join a family vineyard near Telavi or Sighnaghi, pick for an hour or two (it is harder work than it looks), tread grapes in a wooden press called a satsnakheli, and then sit down to a long lunch with mtsvadi, fresh bread from the tone oven and tomato and cucumber salad with walnuts. You will also see churchkhela being made: walnuts threaded on string and dipped in thickened grape juice, then hung to dry.
Plenty of my clients do not drink, and rtveli works just as well for them. The fresh grape juice, called badagi, is wonderful, and I tell the family in advance so there is no pressure at the table. The day also takes in Alaverdi Monastery, the walled town of Sighnaghi with its views across the Alazani Valley, and, if you like, a stop at Bodbe Monastery.
Insider tip
The most popular harvest weekends, the last two weekends of September and the first one of October, fill up early. If your dates are flexible, a Tuesday or Wednesday harvest day is calmer and the families have more time for you.
Tbilisi in autumn
Tbilisi is made for 20°C afternoons. Walk the Old Town from Meidan through the sulphur bath district of Abanotubani, take the cable car up to Narikala Fortress for sunset, and come down through the wooden balconies of Sololaki. Fabrika in Chugureti is good for coffee and an evening drink, and the Dry Bridge market on Saturday and Sunday mornings is the best place for Soviet-era curiosities and old enamel signs.
Tbilisoba, the city festival, usually falls on an October weekend, with harvest stalls, music and grilled meat along the river. On food: khinkali and many classic dishes are often made with pork or a pork and beef mix, so I always flag halal and no-pork requests to restaurants in advance. Tbilisi has several reliable halal kitchens, and our guides know which places will make beef or lamb khinkali on request. Khachapuri, lobio (bean stew in a clay pot), badrijani (aubergine rolls with walnut paste) and pkhali are naturally meat-free.
Kazbegi: colours, then first snow
Stepantsminda, still called Kazbegi by most people, is about 155 km north of Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Road. Allow three to four hours with stops at Ananuri Fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument near Gudauri, and the mineral springs below the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. The reward is Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 m with Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) behind it.
Peak gold in the Truso and Sno valleys is usually the second and third week of October. From late October the pass can see its first snowfall. The road is cleared quickly, but it can close for a few hours or occasionally a day, which is why I never schedule a flight home on the morning after a Kazbegi night. In November, Kazbegi Ridge Lodge offers snow on the peaks, a fire in the lounge and almost no other visitors.
If anyone in your group has limited mobility, the 4x4 transfer to Gergeti saves a steep 90-minute walk. For children under seven, I usually suggest the Juta valley walk instead of a long hike: short, flat, and spectacular in autumn.
A 5-night and a 7-night route
5 nights: Tbilisi, Kakheti and Kazbegi
- Night 1: Arrive Tbilisi, transfer to Hotel Rustaveli Lane, evening walk in the Old Town.
- Night 2: Guided Tbilisi day with the cable car to Narikala and a sulphur bath.
- Night 3: Day trip to Kakheti with harvest experience, back to Tbilisi.
- Nights 4 and 5: Georgian Military Road to Kazbegi, Gergeti on day five, return to Tbilisi for an evening flight on day six.
This is the shape of our Tbilisi and Kazbegi holiday, from AED 2,450 per person twin share with flights, hotels, transfers and touring.
7 nights: the slower loop
Add a night inside Kakheti at the Alazani Valley Wine House so you wake up among the vines, plus an extra night in the mountains for the Truso or Juta valley. Families often prefer our Georgia family mountains trip, which paces the driving for children and includes a horse ride in Kazbegi; it starts from AED 2,890 per person for six nights, and I can extend it to seven.
What autumn in Georgia costs from Dubai
| Item | September to mid-October | Late October to November |
|---|---|---|
| Direct return flight, Economy | AED 1,100 to 1,700 | AED 900 to 1,400 |
| 4-star Tbilisi hotel, per room per night | AED 380 to 600 | AED 300 to 480 |
| Mountain lodge in Kazbegi, per room per night | AED 450 to 750 | AED 350 to 600 |

The harvest weeks and the UAE October break carry a premium of roughly 15 to 20 per cent. Food is excellent value: a generous dinner for two with soft drinks in Tbilisi is about AED 120 to 200. Budget AED 150 to 250 per person per day for meals and small extras.
What to pack for a Georgian autumn
- Layers: T-shirts and a light jumper for Tbilisi, plus a warm fleece and a windproof jacket for Kazbegi, where October nights drop to 0 to 3°C.
- Shoes: Tbilisi's Old Town is steep and cobbled. Bring trainers with real grip, and waterproof walking shoes for the mountains.
- For November: A proper winter coat, hat and gloves if you are staying in the mountains.
- Churches: Women are asked to cover their hair and wear a skirt at many churches and monasteries. Wraps are usually available at the door, but a light scarf in your bag is easier.
- Harvest day: Clothes you do not mind staining. Grape juice does not wash out.
- Cash: Cards work in Tbilisi, but carry some lari for village markets and roadside churchkhela stalls.
Visa basics for UAE residents
This is general guidance, and it varies by nationality. Citizens of the GCC and of many other countries can enter Georgia visa-free for tourism. Several nationalities that would normally need a visa can also enter visa-free if they hold a valid GCC residence permit, and others can apply for an e-visa online, which typically takes about five working days. Your passport should be valid for the whole stay and ideally six months beyond it. Georgia has also moved to require travel insurance for visitors, so we include a policy in every package. Rules change; we confirm the current requirements before you apply. You can see the details our visa team checks on our Georgia tourist visa page, and more on the country itself on our Georgia destination guide.
If you already know your dates, send me your group size and whether you want the harvest, the colours or the first snow, and I will price a route the same day. Start with the 5-night Tbilisi and Kazbegi holiday, or ask for a tailor-made Georgia trip if you want extra nights in the vineyards.
