We split this honeymoon in two on purpose. Ubud, in the hills about 75 minutes from the airport, is the Bali of rice terraces, water temples, morning mist and very good food; Uluwatu, on the limestone Bukit peninsula in the south, is the Bali of cliffs, surf beaches and sunsets. Doing it in this order means you land after the long overnight flight into somewhere calm and green, and you finish the trip with four slow days by the sea rather than packing on a beach and driving inland.
In Ubud your guide collects you early on the first full day, which matters: Tegallalang is beautiful at 7.30 and crowded by 10. You then bathe at Tirta Empul, the spring water temple, before lunch overlooking the Ayung valley. The hotels on every tier are a short drive from the centre with valley or rice field views; on the deluxe tier each villa has its own pool. Ubud is cooler than the coast, around 28 degrees by day, and evening showers are common even in the dry season.
The transfer south takes about an hour and 45 minutes. On the Bukit you are close to Padang Padang, Bingin and Melasti beaches, and the clifftop Uluwatu Temple, where the Kecak fire dance starts at sunset. We include tickets and seats are unreserved, so your driver gets you there 45 minutes early. The floating breakfast, the 90-minute couples' massage and the private candlelit dinner on the cliff are all booked in advance by Joanna Dela Cruz's team, so there is nothing to arrange on the day.
Who it suits: couples who want both culture and beach without moving hotels every night. Flights from Dubai take about 9.5 hours. Balinese food is generous with halal options in most tourist areas, and seafood grilled on the sand at Jimbaran is a good last-night dinner. Expect slow traffic: plan 45 minutes for 15 kilometres. Bring modest clothing for temples; sarongs are provided at the gates.

Day by day
Day 1Arrive in Bali, transfer to Ubud
Your overnight flight from Dubai lands at Denpasar in the afternoon after about 9.5 hours. Our driver meets you outside arrivals with a name board and cold towels, and the drive up to Ubud takes 75 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Check in, change into something light and walk the quiet lane to dinner, or simply order room service and sleep. The honeymoon welcome of flowers, fruit and a small cake is waiting in your room. Overnight in Ubud.
Day 2Tegallalang terraces and the Tirta Empul water temple
Your driver-guide collects you at 7 am, which is the secret to Tegallalang: soft light, cool air and almost no one on the paths. Walk down through the terraces for about an hour, then continue 20 minutes to Tirta Empul, where you can join the purification ritual in the spring-fed pools; sarongs are provided. Lunch is at a warung overlooking the Ayung valley, then a stop at a coffee plantation before returning to the hotel by mid-afternoon. Overnight in Ubud.
Day 3Ubud at your own pace, floating breakfast and spa
A slow morning: your floating breakfast is served in the pool at a time you choose the evening before. Late morning, walk the Campuhan Ridge path, a 45-minute loop along a grassy ridge between two rivers, or visit the Sacred Monkey Forest, keeping sunglasses and snacks out of reach. The 90-minute couples' Balinese massage is booked for the afternoon. In the evening, browse Ubud market and the galleries on Jalan Hanoman, and have dinner at one of the many garden restaurants. Overnight in Ubud.
Day 4Drive south to Uluwatu, Kecak dance at sunset
Check out at noon and drive south for about an hour and 45 minutes to the Bukit peninsula, stopping for lunch near Jimbaran if you are hungry. After checking into your clifftop hotel, your driver collects you at 5 pm for Uluwatu Temple, perched 70 metres above the waves. Walk the cliff path, then take your seats for the Kecak fire dance, a chant-driven retelling of the Ramayana performed as the sun drops into the ocean. Return around 7.30 pm for a late dinner. Overnight in Uluwatu.
Day 5Beaches of the Bukit
Today is free for the beaches, each a short taxi ride away. Padang Padang is small and pretty, reached through a rock crevice; Bingin has steep steps, surfers and cliffside cafés; Melasti is wide, white and good for swimming at mid tide. Your hotel can arrange a driver for half a day at about AED 110. Tides matter here, so check the times at reception. Back by late afternoon to rest before your private candlelit dinner on the cliff, served at sunset. Overnight in Uluwatu.
Day 6Free day, or a boat trip to Nusa Penida
Spend the day by the pool, or take the optional Nusa Penida day trip: a hotel pick-up at 6.30 am, a 45-minute fast boat from Sanur, then Kelingking Beach viewpoint, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong, returning by about 6 pm. It is a long, bumpy but spectacular day, best for couples who like to be busy. If you stay, Uluwatu's clifftop beach clubs are relaxed in the daytime and lively at sunset. Overnight in Uluwatu.
Day 7Last full day, seafood at Jimbaran
A final unscheduled day for swimming, reading and long lunches. Many couples book a second spa treatment or a surf lesson at Padang Padang, which suits beginners on small days. In the late afternoon, take a 25-minute taxi to Jimbaran Bay for grilled seafood at tables on the sand: choose your fish from the ice, agree the price per kilo first, and stay for the sunset. Pack this evening, as tomorrow's transfer is timed around your flight. Overnight in Uluwatu.
Day 8Transfer to the airport and fly home
Enjoy breakfast and the pool until check-out. Your driver collects you about three and a half hours before departure; the airport is 30 to 45 minutes away, but traffic around Kuta can be unpredictable, so we build in a margin. Late check-out can be requested for evening flights and is confirmed the day before, subject to availability. Your flight to Dubai takes around 9.5 hours. Our operations team tracks the flight and is reachable throughout.

Travellers on this holiday
We married in Lahore and flew out via Dubai a week later. Joanna sent our food requirements to both villas ahead of time and arranged one private driver for the whole stay. The Mount Batur sunrise trek was hard work at 2am, but standing above the clouds made it worth it.
Wonderful villas in both places. The transfer from Ubud down to Uluwatu took over two hours in traffic, which we had not expected for such a short distance on the map. The Kecak dance and the seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran were special.
Three nights in Ubud and four in Uluwatu was the perfect balance. Private pool villa above the jungle, Tegallalang rice terraces at sunrise, then cliff-top sunsets and the Kecak dance at Uluwatu temple. Joanna planned our honeymoon right down to the flower bath on the first evening.
Russian couple from Dubai Marina, wanting a mix of yoga and beach. The balance was right: the Campuhan ridge walk, a Balinese cooking class that started at the morning market, and a surf lesson at Padang Padang. Nicely paced, never rushed.
