In shortThis is an 8-night independent Japan trip, four nights in Tokyo and four in Kyoto, from AED 10,450 per person twin share. It includes return flights from Dubai, hotels with breakfast, three days with a private guide, reserved bullet train seats, a preloaded travel card, luggage forwarding and a tea ceremony. The best months are late March to May and October to November.

This is the trip we recommend for a first visit to Japan, and the one Hana Kimura, our Japan specialist, plans most often. It is independent rather than a group tour, but it is not loose: every train is reserved, you have a private guide on the three days where context matters most, and your suitcase travels separately between cities, so you never haul luggage through Tokyo Station at rush hour.

Tokyo comes first, with four nights. Day two covers the old east of the city with your guide: Asakusa, the Sumida River, the outer market at Tsukiji and Ginza. Day three is the west: Meiji Jingu, Harajuku and Shibuya. The guide also teaches you the metro, which pays off on day four, a self-guided trip to Kamakura, an hour south, for the Great Buddha and the seaside temples. Hotels on all three tiers are within five minutes' walk of a major station.

The bullet train to Kyoto takes 2 hours 15 minutes, and we reserve seats on the E side of the carriage, which faces Mt Fuji for about ten minutes on clear days. Kyoto gets four nights, because it rewards early mornings: Fushimi Inari at 7 am is a different place from Fushimi Inari at 11. Your guided day covers Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and the Golden Pavilion; Arashiyama and a tea ceremony follow, and the final full day combines Nara's deer park with an evening of street food in Osaka. You fly home from Kansai Airport, so there is no backtracking to Tokyo.

What to expect: the flight from Dubai is about 9.5 hours. Spring and autumn are the most beautiful seasons but also the busiest, and we book them six months ahead. Japan is very safe, very clean and very walkable, often 20,000 steps a day, so bring good shoes. Halal food is easy to find in Tokyo and Kyoto if you know where to look, and Hana's list of tested restaurants comes with your documents.

Day by day

Day 1Arrive in Tokyo, first evening in Shinjuku

Your flight from Dubai lands in Tokyo after about 9.5 hours. Collect your pocket wifi and transport card at the arrivals desk, then take the airport limousine bus, which stops at your hotel or a short walk from it; journey time is 40 to 90 minutes depending on the airport. After check-in, head to Shinjuku for your first look at the neon: the alleys of Omoide Yokocho, the giant screens of Kabukicho and dinner in one of the department store restaurant floors. Overnight in Tokyo.

Day 2Old Tokyo with your guide: Asakusa, Tsukiji and Ginza

Your guide meets you in the lobby at 9 am and shows you the metro on the way to Asakusa, home to Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple, and the snack stalls of Nakamise street. Walk along the Sumida River for views of the Skytree, then take the train to the Tsukiji outer market for a grazing lunch of tamagoyaki, grilled scallops and fresh fruit. The afternoon ends in Ginza's department stores and their basement food halls. The guided day runs about seven hours. Overnight in Tokyo.

Day 3Modern Tokyo: Meiji Jingu, Harajuku and Shibuya

With your guide again, start at Meiji Jingu, a calm shrine in a forest planted a century ago, then walk into Harajuku's Takeshita Street and the elegant boulevard of Omotesando. After lunch, continue to Shibuya to watch the famous crossing from above and walk the backstreets of Shibuya and Ebisu. Your guide finishes around 4 pm and can recommend an evening area matched to your interests. Many travellers end at the free observation deck of the Metropolitan Government Building. Overnight in Tokyo.

Day 4Self-guided day trip to Kamakura

Using your transport card, take the train about an hour south to Kamakura, the old samurai capital by the sea. Hana's printed route takes you from Kita-Kamakura's Zen temples through the town to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine, then by the little Enoden railway to Hase for the 13-metre bronze Great Buddha and Hase-dera temple with its ocean views. Return to Tokyo by late afternoon. This evening your suitcase is collected from the hotel for forwarding to Kyoto, so keep an overnight bag. Overnight in Tokyo.

Day 5Bullet train to Kyoto, evening in Gion

Walk or take a short taxi to Tokyo Station for your reserved bullet train, 2 hours 15 minutes to Kyoto. Sit on the E side for the Mt Fuji view roughly 45 minutes after departure. Buy a bento on the platform, as eating on board is normal. Your suitcase arrives at the Kyoto hotel by evening. In the late afternoon, walk through Gion's lantern-lit lanes, along Hanamikoji and the Shirakawa canal, and have dinner in narrow Pontocho alley by the river. Overnight in Kyoto.

Day 6Kyoto with your guide: Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Golden Pavilion

Your guide meets you at 6.45 am for Fushimi Inari before the tour groups arrive, walking up through the vermilion torii gates to the Yotsutsuji viewpoint. After breakfast near the shrine, visit Kiyomizu-dera and its wooden terrace, then wander the stone lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka for pottery and matcha sweets. After lunch, cross the city by taxi to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion reflected in its pond. The guided day ends around 3 pm. Overnight in Kyoto.

Day 7Arashiyama bamboo grove and tea ceremony

Take the train 20 minutes west to Arashiyama and walk the bamboo grove early, then visit the Zen garden of Tenryu-ji. Cross the Togetsukyo bridge and, if you like, climb 20 minutes to the monkey park for views over the city. In the afternoon, return to central Kyoto for your tea ceremony, about 75 minutes in a traditional machiya townhouse, where a tea master explains each movement. The evening is free for Nishiki Market or a riverside dinner. Overnight in Kyoto.

Day 8Nara by day, Osaka by night

The train to Nara takes 45 minutes. Walk through Nara Park among its free-roaming deer, buy crackers to feed them, and visit Todai-ji, whose hall houses a 15-metre bronze Buddha. Continue to Kasuga Taisha and its lanterns. In the late afternoon, take the train 40 minutes to Osaka for Dotonbori, the neon canal famed for takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu. Halal options are marked in your guide. Return to Kyoto by train in under 30 minutes. Overnight in Kyoto.

Day 9Express train to Kansai Airport and fly home

Enjoy a final breakfast and, if your flight allows, a last walk along the Kamo River. Your reserved express train runs from Kyoto Station to Kansai International Airport in about 75 minutes; allow at least two and a half hours at the airport. Your suitcase stays with you today, so pack the night before. The flight back to Dubai takes about 11 hours. Our operations team tracks your journey and is on call throughout.

Questions about this holiday

What is the best month for Tokyo and Kyoto?
Late March to May for blossom and fresh green, and mid October to late November for autumn colour and clear skies. June brings the rainy season, July and August are hot and humid, and January and February are cold but quiet, with lower hotel prices.
Do UAE residents need a visa for Japan?
Some nationalities enter Japan visa free for tourism, while others apply in advance through the embassy. It varies by nationality and rules change, so our visa team confirms the current requirements for your passport before you book and can prepare the application.
Why not a Japan Rail Pass?
Since the pass price rose sharply, a single reserved bullet train ticket plus a preloaded transport card is cheaper for this route. If you extend to Hiroshima or the Japanese Alps, Hana will recheck whether a regional pass saves money.
Is halal food easy to find?
Yes, with a little planning. Tokyo and Kyoto both have halal-certified ramen, wagyu and sushi restaurants, and many restaurants offer Muslim-friendly menus. Your documents include Hana's list of tested places near each hotel, and prayer rooms are available at major stations and airports.
Is this trip suitable for children?
Yes. Children love the trains, the deer of Nara and the food. The child price is for ages 2 to 11 sharing with two adults; Japanese rooms are compact, so for families of four we book connecting rooms or apartment-style hotels at a small supplement.
Can I add Hakone or Hiroshima?
Yes. One night in a Hakone ryokan fits neatly between Tokyo and Kyoto, and two nights in Hiroshima with a day on Miyajima fit after Kyoto. Each adds roughly AED 1,200 to 2,000 per person depending on the tier.

Eight nights in Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto, travelling independently but planned to the minute. Hana gave us a rail pass guide, a list of small local restaurants and a night in a ryokan with its own onsen in Hakone, where we woke to Mount Fuji on a clear morning.

Our replyWe are delighted it went so well, Divya. Thank you for travelling with us.
British family with two teenagers who are hard to impress. Akihabara, a morning watching sumo practice, the Nara deer and Osaka street food in Dotonbori. Hana arranged luggage forwarding between cities so we only carried backpacks on the trains. Best family holiday we have had.

Our replyThank you so much, Emily. Reviews like this make Hana's week.
My husband is a railway enthusiast and Hana built the trip around it: shinkansen seats on the correct side for Fuji, the little mountain train in Hakone, even a rail museum afternoon. I got Arashiyama bamboo grove at seven in the morning before the coaches arrived, so we were both happy.

Our replyWe are delighted it went so well, Deepa. Thank you for travelling with us.
Excellent planning, and the townhouse stay in Kyoto was charming. Our Tokyo room faced a concrete wall rather than the city, and the hotel could not move us. Breakfast at Tsukiji outer market and Shibuya crossing at night were still memorable.

Our replyThank you, Omar, and thank you for the honest note. We have passed it to our operations team so the next trip is even smoother.
