Swiss Alps family summer: Lucerne, Grindelwald and the Jungfraujoch by train
Switzerland · 7 nights, 8 days · 4.8 (4)
Switzerland is one of the easiest places in Europe to travel with children, provided you do not try to see all of it. This trip uses just two bases. Lucerne, an hour by train from Zurich airport, gives you a lakeside city with a medieval bridge, paddle steamers and two mountains within easy reach. Grindelwald, in the Bernese Oberland, puts you in a chalet village beneath the north face of the Eiger, with the region's best family days on your doorstep. One train change between them, no hire car and no daily packing.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses and lake boats across the country, and with the free Swiss Family Card, which we order for you, children under 16 travel free with a parent. The pass also includes Mt Rigi and the Swiss Museum of Transport discount, and cuts the cost of the mountain railways. We add the tickets that are not covered: the Pilatus golden round trip from Lucerne, the Jungfraujoch at 3,454 metres, and the Grindelwald First gondola with its cliff walk.
Pacing is built for families. Big mountain days alternate with easier ones, and nothing starts before 8.30 am except the Jungfraujoch, where the first trains beat the cloud that often builds by midday. Hotels on every tier offer family rooms or interconnecting rooms with breakfast, and in Grindelwald the superior and deluxe chalets have kitchenettes for picnic lunches. Elena Volkova, our Switzerland specialist, books Jungfraujoch on a flexible ticket so we can move it to the clearest day.
What to expect: Zurich is a 6.5-hour direct flight from Dubai. Summer days in the valleys reach 22 to 26 degrees, but the Jungfraujoch can be below freezing, so pack warm jackets, gloves and sunglasses for everyone. Switzerland is expensive for meals: a family lunch typically costs AED 350 to 500, so supermarket picnics on a mountain bench are both thrifty and the best view in town. Halal meat is available in Lucerne and Interlaken butchers and some restaurants.

Day by day
Day 1Fly to Zurich, train to Lucerne
The direct flight from Dubai to Zurich takes about 6.5 hours, landing in the early afternoon. The station is below the terminal, and your Swiss Travel Pass covers the train to Lucerne, about an hour with one easy change or none. Your hotel is a short walk or taxi from Lucerne station. In the late afternoon, walk across the Chapel Bridge with its painted panels, see the Lion Monument carved into the rock, and have an early family dinner by the River Reuss. Overnight in Lucerne.
Day 2Pilatus golden round trip
Board a lake steamer at 9.30 am for the 90-minute cruise to Alpnachstad, then ride the world's steepest cogwheel railway up Mt Pilatus, with gradients of up to 48 percent. At the top, short paved paths lead to viewpoints over the lakes and alps. On the way down by gondola, stop at Fräkmüntegg for the summer toboggan run and the rope park, the highlight for many children. Continue by gondola to Kriens and take the bus back into Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne.
Day 3Mt Rigi and the Swiss Museum of Transport
Take the boat to Vitznau, about an hour, and ride Europe's oldest mountain railway up Mt Rigi, the Queen of the Mountains, fully covered by your pass. Walk the gentle 40-minute path from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Staffel with views of the lakes, then descend by train and cable car to Weggis for the boat back. In the afternoon, visit the Swiss Museum of Transport, where children can drive simulators, climb into locomotives and visit the planetarium. Overnight in Lucerne.
Day 4Luzern-Interlaken Express to Grindelwald
Take the panoramic Luzern-Interlaken Express, with seats reserved, for a scenic two-hour ride over the Brünig Pass, past Lake Lungern and Lake Brienz. Change at Interlaken Ost for the 35-minute train up to Grindelwald. After lunch and check-in, take the short walk to the Pfingstegg cable car for the summer toboggan run, or explore the village and its playground. Dinner of rösti or cheese fondue in the village is a family favourite. Overnight in Grindelwald.
Day 5Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe
Elena's team books this day flexibly so you can choose the clearest morning. Take the Eiger Express gondola to Eigergletscher in 15 minutes, then the Jungfrau railway through the mountain to Europe's highest station at 3,454 metres. Visit the Sphinx terrace for views over the Aletsch Glacier, the Ice Palace and the snow fun park with tubing. Allow four to five hours in total and pace children carefully at altitude. Return via Kleine Scheidegg and Wengernalp for different views. Overnight in Grindelwald.
Day 6Grindelwald First and Bachalpsee
Ride the gondola to First, 25 minutes up, and walk the First Cliff Walk, a metal walkway clinging to the rock face. Then hike the wide, gentle trail to Bachalpsee, about an hour each way, where the lake mirrors the Schreckhorn peaks; it is suitable for children from five. Picnic by the water. On the way down, the optional First Flyer zip line, the mountain carts and the Trottibike scooters make a thrilling descent back to the village. Overnight in Grindelwald.
Day 7Lauterbrunnen waterfalls and car-free Mürren
Take the train to Lauterbrunnen, a valley of 72 waterfalls, and walk to the Staubbach falls in the village. Continue by bus to the Trümmelbach falls, glacier water thundering inside the mountain, reached by a tunnel lift. After lunch, ride the cable car and mountain train to Mürren, a car-free village on a cliff, and the funicular to Allmendhubel for its flower trail and adventure playground. Return to Grindelwald for a farewell dinner. Overnight in Grindelwald.
Day 8Train to Zurich airport and fly home
After breakfast, take the train from Grindelwald to Zurich airport, about two hours 45 minutes with a change at Interlaken Ost and sometimes Bern, all covered by your pass. Swiss trains carry luggage easily, and for a fee the railway can send your suitcases ahead the day before so you travel light. Allow two hours at the airport. The direct flight to Dubai takes about six hours.

Travellers on this holiday
Two children under ten, and the First cliff walk above Grindelwald plus the mountain carts were the best things they have ever done. Seat reservations on the busy trains meant we never scrambled. Elena also prepared our Schengen visa file and booked the appointment for us.
Interlaken first, then Zermatt, seven nights with the rail pass covering every train and lake boat. Jungfraujoch with the kids, then the Matterhorn from Gornergrat. We had a family apartment in Zermatt so we could cook a couple of evenings and save on dinners.
Fabulous trip overall. Our Interlaken room faced the station car park rather than the mountains, which was a shame given the setting. The Lake Brienz boat and sunset from Harder Kulm were unforgettable, and the kids loved the playground at the top.
Lebanese family of six, first time in Europe with the kids. Elena sorted the Schengen files, the travel passes and a family room with a balcony in Lauterbrunnen. Staubbach Falls from the window and Trümmelbach Falls roaring inside the mountain.
