Hatta mountain day trip with dam kayaking and the heritage village
9 h · starts 07:30 · 4.7 (3)
Hatta is Dubai's mountain enclave, about 90 minutes from the city in the Hajar Mountains, and it feels like another country: rocky peaks, palm groves and cool mornings in winter. We go in a 12-seat van rather than a coach, because the best stops are small and the mountain roads are narrow. Ramesh Karki, who also guides our desert trips, leads most Hatta days and knows every viewpoint on the route. Pickup is about 07:00, half an hour before the official start, so we reach the dam before the day visitors.
The first stop is Hatta Dam, where the turquoise water sits between bare mountains. You get an hour in a kayak, single or double, with life jackets and a short briefing from the kayak centre staff; no experience is needed and the water is flat. The minimum age is six, and children paddle in a double kayak with an adult. Afterwards we visit Hatta Heritage Village, a restored mountain settlement with mud-brick houses, a fort and watchtowers, where your guide explains how families farmed and defended these valleys.
Lunch is at a local restaurant in Hatta, with grills, curries and vegetarian dishes. In the afternoon we visit a honey bee garden, where beekeepers show you how wild mountain honey is harvested, with a tasting that is genuinely different from supermarket honey. We finish with a slow drive on the mountain roads to a viewpoint above the town, then return to Dubai at about 16:30. The honest part: there is some walking on uneven ground and the heritage village has steep steps to the watchtower, which you can skip. From May to September kayaking is very hot by late morning, so we start earlier. Cheaper Hatta trips often skip the kayak fee and charge it on the day; ours includes it.

Guests on this experience
Kayaking on the turquoise water of Hatta Dam, a walk up to the heritage village with its old watchtowers, and lunch beside the wadi. Fatima knew every trail and the best spot for photos of the Hajar mountains. A real change from the city.
Beautiful day out, though it was warmer than we expected for early November and the midday walk was tiring. Mohammed kept everyone topped up with cold water and shortened the hike for the slower half of the group. Kayaking on the dam was the best part.
Five friends who like to keep moving. Mountain biking on the beginner trails, an hour on the dam in kayaks, then the honey bee garden where we tasted sidr honey straight from the comb. Ramesh pushed us just enough. Back in Dubai Marina by six.
